A new candidate has entered the race for Prince George’s County Executive, adding another voice to what could become a closely watched contest in one of Maryland’s most influential jurisdictions.
Greg Holmes announced this week that he has filed his candidacy and launched a countywide campaign ahead of the June 23, 2026 election. Holmes says his campaign will focus on economic growth, public safety, and affordability for county residents.
“Prince George’s County deserves leadership that performs—competent, accountable, and focused on results people can actually feel,” Holmes said in announcing his campaign.
Holmes’ campaign says it is focused on building a government that is measurable, transparent, future-focused, and built on results, with policies aimed at strengthening the county’s economy and improving quality of life for residents.
Three Core Priorities
Holmes’ platform centers on three main policy areas:
Economic Growth — “Win the Future.”
Holmes says the county should focus on attracting investment, supporting businesses, expanding the tax base, and preparing local workers for future jobs.
Security — “Prevention, Partnership, Performance.”
His campaign proposes a broader public safety strategy that includes prevention, collaboration with communities and law enforcement, and measurable accountability.
Affordability — “Stability Families Can Feel.”
Holmes says improving government efficiency and growing the county’s commercial base could reduce long-term tax pressure on residents and improve economic stability for families.
Business and Civic Background
Holmes enters the race with experience in both the private and nonprofit sectors. He currently serves as Managing Principal of HV Ventures Global LLC and Executive Director of the Norman F. Holmes Foundation, organizations focused on economic development initiatives and community programs.
The campaign says that background reflects Holmes’ focus on partnership-building and results-oriented leadership.
Political Background
Holmes is running as a Democrat in the Prince George’s County Executive race, though he has previously run for federal office earlier in his political career as a Republican.
In response to questions from MDBayNews, the Holmes campaign said his political background reflects a willingness to work across party lines.
“Greg has run for federal office in the past. Earlier in his public-service journey, he ran as a Republican, and in 2020 he was elected and served as a Joe Biden delegate to the Democratic National Convention,” the campaign said.
The campaign said Holmes now describes his political outlook as focused on performance in government rather than partisan identity.
“Greg is running as a Democrat for Prince George’s County Executive,” the campaign told MDBayNews. “He describes his politics today as results-driven and grounded in service—focused on delivering outcomes for residents rather than partisan identity.”
The campaign also addressed reports suggesting Holmes had connections to former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan’s political network, saying Holmes has worked across sectors but has not served as a political operative for any governor.
“Greg’s work has involved economic development, civic leadership, and cross-sector partnership,” the campaign said. “He has not been a political operative for any former governor.”
A County Facing Major Policy Questions
Prince George’s County is Maryland’s second-most populous county and plays a major role in the Washington region’s economy and political landscape.
The next county executive will face a range of challenges, including economic development, public safety concerns in some communities, rising costs for residents, and managing growth tied to the broader Washington metropolitan area.
Holmes says his campaign is focused on moving beyond traditional political divisions and delivering measurable results.
“Prince George’s County deserves executive leadership which is more focused on the future than on old politics,” Holmes said. “This campaign is not about partisan identity—it’s about delivering a new standard of executive leadership focused on economic growth, security, and affordability.”
Holmes’ campaign says he will begin meeting with residents and community stakeholders across the county as the race moves toward the 2026 election.
