GAITHERSBURG, Md. — With a reelection campaign approaching, a Maryland state legislator representing Legislative District 17 is facing renewed scrutiny after publicly defending middle school students protesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during school hours — and responding to parental concerns with profanity rather than oversight.
Images circulated online this week showing flyers and messaging encouraging students at a public middle school in Gaithersburg to participate in an anti-ICE protest during the school day. Parents and community members raised questions about political neutrality in public schools, parental notification, and whether taxpayer-funded instructional time should be used for organized political activism involving minors.
The legislator’s response was not clarification or inquiry — but an angry social-media outburst telling critics to “keep [the school] out of your f***ing mouth.”

As the delegate prepares to ask voters for another term, that reaction has become a focal point for critics who say it reveals troubling priorities.
Governance Questions, Not Ideology
Supporters attempted to frame the criticism as an attack on students or a proxy fight over immigration policy. But parents and community members interviewed by MDBayNews emphasized that the issue is process and accountability, not the substance of the protest.
“This isn’t about ICE,” one District 17 parent said. “It’s about whether public schools should be used to organize political protests during school hours — and whether our representative respects parents enough to answer basic questions.”
Those questions remain unanswered:
- Who approved the protest activity?
- Were parents notified or given opt-out options?
- Would opposing political viewpoints have been treated the same?
- Is this consistent with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) policy?
Oversight Abandoned, Profanity Delivered
As an elected state legislator, the LD-17 delegate holds oversight responsibilities for public institutions — including schools. Critics say the choice to lash out rather than investigate reflects an unwillingness to engage constituents respectfully, particularly when the issue involves minors.
“For someone campaigning on competence and credentials, the meltdown was jarring,” another resident said. “Parents asked reasonable questions. He answered with contempt.”
The contrast has not gone unnoticed, especially given the legislator’s frequent emphasis on elite academic background and professional résumé. For many voters, the episode raised doubts about temperament and judgment under pressure.
A Double Standard That Resonates With Voters
Parents also highlighted what they view as a double standard that could resonate during an election year.
Had middle school students been encouraged to protest in support of ICE or against Democratic immigration policies, critics argue the reaction from school officials and lawmakers would have been swift. Instead, concerns were dismissed — and critics were attacked.
That inconsistency, they say, undermines trust and reinforces perceptions that public schools are being treated as ideological spaces rather than neutral learning environments.
Silence From MCPS, Spotlight on the Ballot
As of publication, MCPS has not publicly explained how the protest activity was approved or whether parents were notified. The lack of transparency has only heightened attention — particularly as voters in District 17 evaluate whether their representative’s response reflects the leadership they want for another term.
For many parents, the issue is simple.
“We’re not trying to silence kids,” one parent said. “We’re asking elected officials to act like adults — and to remember who they work for.”
With reelection on the horizon, that question may soon be answered at the ballot box.
What LD-17 Voters Should Know
Who:
The lawmaker represents Legislative District 17, which includes Gaithersburg and surrounding communities.
What Happened:
- Middle school students were encouraged to participate in a political protest opposing ICE during school hours.
- Parents raised questions about political neutrality, parental notification, and use of instructional time.
- Instead of seeking answers or requesting clarification from MCPS, the legislator publicly lashed out at critics with profanity.
Why It Matters:
- State legislators have oversight responsibility for public institutions, including schools.
- Political activism involving minors during the school day raises legitimate governance and parental-rights questions — regardless of ideology.
- Voters are entitled to representatives who respond with transparency and professionalism, not hostility.
Double Standard Concern:
- Critics note that if students had been encouraged to protest in support of ICE or conservative causes, the reaction from officials would likely have been very different.
- Consistent standards are key to maintaining trust in public schools.
Election Context:
- The legislator is seeking reelection.
- How elected officials handle constituent concerns — especially those involving children and schools — is often a deciding factor for undecided and independent voters.
The Question for Voters:
Do LD-17 voters want a representative who engages respectfully with parents and provides oversight — or one who dismisses concerns with profanity when challenged?
