As Maryland’s 2026 gubernatorial race begins to take shape, a new Republican voice is attempting to carve out space in a state long dominated by Democratic leadership: Carl Brunner Jr., a Baltimore-born blue-collar worker who says he is running to “restore safety, affordability, and trust in our government.”
Brunner recently outlined his platform in a public post, focusing on five core areas: public safety, taxes and spending, energy costs, cost of living, and government accountability. His message is direct, populist, and aimed squarely at working-class voters who feel left behind.
A Law-and-Order Focus
On public safety, Brunner strikes a familiar center-right tone. He pledges full support for law enforcement while also demanding professionalism and accountability. He says his administration would target repeat violent offenders, strengthen state-local partnerships, and expand crime prevention programs that “actually work.”
In a state where Baltimore’s crime trends often shape the broader political narrative, Brunner’s emphasis on safety first is likely to resonate with suburban and exurban voters who view public order as a foundational issue.
Taxes, Spending, and an Audit of Government
Brunner argues that Maryland families are “overtaxed” and small businesses “overburdened.” He calls for a top-to-bottom audit of state spending, elimination of waste, and a reduction in unnecessary fees.
His broader message is fiscal restraint. “Stop growing government faster than our economy grows,” he says — a line that fits squarely within traditional Republican budget discipline themes.
With concerns about residents relocating to lower-tax states and businesses citing regulatory burdens, Brunner’s tax-and-spending platform could tap into an existing undercurrent of economic frustration.
Energy and Utility Costs
Marylanders across the state have been hit with rising utility bills, and Brunner is leaning into that frustration. He calls for greater oversight of rate increases, increased grid reliability, and what he describes as a “balanced energy strategy” focused on affordability and stability.
Rather than rejecting environmental priorities outright, he frames his argument around cost and reliability — a pragmatic approach that attempts to avoid ideological extremes while criticizing what many voters see as opaque rate-setting processes.
Cost of Living and Workforce Development
Brunner ties together housing, groceries, and job creation under a broader “cost of living” umbrella. His solution centers on encouraging business growth, supporting small businesses, and expanding workforce training.
It’s a familiar growth-oriented conservative economic pitch: lower costs by expanding opportunity, not by expanding bureaucracy.
Government Accountability
Perhaps the most populist element of Brunner’s platform is his call for ethics oversight and transparency in state contracts and spending. He argues that state government must work “for the people, not special interests,” and promises to make agencies more responsive and efficient.
In a one-party-dominant state like Maryland, outsider candidates often lean heavily on reform rhetoric. Brunner is no exception.
A Long Road Ahead
Brunner’s biography — born and raised in Baltimore City, blue-collar worker, first-time statewide candidate — positions him as an outsider. That outsider status can be both an asset and a liability.
Maryland remains a reliably Democratic state at the statewide level, though Republican governors have won before when they successfully broadened their coalition beyond the party base. For Brunner, the challenge will be name recognition, fundraising, organizational infrastructure, and whether his message can break through in a crowded political landscape.
Still, his early platform shows clear alignment with core center-right priorities: public safety, fiscal restraint, energy affordability, economic growth, and government transparency.
Whether that message gains traction beyond social media posts remains to be seen. But as voters begin tuning into the 2026 race, Carl Brunner Jr. is making it clear that he intends to be part of the conversation.
