A hometown success story is turning into tangible help for Western Maryland families.
LA Knight, a current WWE Raw superstar and Hagerstown native, has donated $20,000 to United Way of Washington County to support local community impact programs serving some of the county’s most vulnerable residents.
United Way of Washington County announced the donation on January 15, calling it a significant investment that will immediately benefit residents facing food insecurity and economic hardship. Knight, whose real name is Shaun Ricker, said the decision to give locally was intentional.
“I was truly honored to receive the key to the city. Now, it’s my turn to give back to the community that has given me so much,” Ricker said. “I decided to make this investment because I trust United Way to allocate these funds where they are most needed. I hope that this contribution inspires others to consider how they can support our local neighbors in their own unique ways.”

Where the Money Will Go
According to United Way, the $20,000 donation will be distributed across several critical need areas in Washington County, including:
- ALICE Urgent Needs Fund – Supporting households that are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed, a growing segment of the population that earns above the federal poverty line but still cannot meet basic needs.
- Weekend food security programs – Serving more than 1,200 children, ensuring access to meals outside of school hours.
- Local pet food assistance – Helping families keep their pets during periods of financial strain, rather than surrendering them due to food costs.
United Way officials note that Washington County’s ALICE population fluctuates between 41% and 43% annually, highlighting the scale of economic pressure facing working families despite employment.
A Local Connection With National Reach
Knight’s donation also reflects the role high-profile local figures can play in amplifying awareness of community-based nonprofits. While his career has taken him to national and international stages, the impact of this contribution remains rooted in Washington County.
United Way President and CEO Heather H. Guessford, who was pictured with Knight during the announcement, emphasized that donations like this not only fund services but also help build momentum for broader community engagement.

Keeping Help Local
For readers unfamiliar with United Way’s structure, local chapters such as United Way of Washington County operate independently. Donations raised locally stay in the community, funding partner nonprofits and direct assistance programs tailored to county-specific needs.
As economic uncertainty, inflation, and housing pressures continue into 2026, United Way leaders say community partnerships and local philanthropy remain essential.
Knight’s donation, they say, is a reminder that giving back doesn’t have to be abstract or distant—it can be focused, local, and immediately impactful for neighbors in need.
