DC Police Probe Possible Double Suicide at Carter Barron Amphitheater; Two Adults Found Dead in Parked Vehicle

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two adults were found dead from gunshot wounds inside a parked vehicle at the Carter Barron Amphitheater late Saturday night, prompting an active Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) investigation that early evidence suggests may lean toward a double suicide rather than a traditional homicide.

Police responded around 10:30 p.m. on December 6, 2025, to reports of gunfire in the 4800 block of Colorado Avenue NW, a wooded area of Rock Creek Park near the long-shuttered amphitheater. MPD’s Third District officers and U.S. Park Police located the victims inside a vehicle in the main parking area. Medics pronounced both adults dead at the scene.

MPD has not yet released the victims’ identities pending notification of their families.

In an early-morning alert on X, MPD confirmed “police activity” in the area and stated there was “no threat to the public.”

Scene Details and Police Response

The Carter Barron Amphitheater—closed to performances since 2017 but still accessible to visitors—sits on federal parkland and is surrounded by dense forest, making the location relatively secluded at night. Investigators established a perimeter around the parking lot as crime-scene technicians processed the vehicle and immediate area between 11:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m.

Footage posted by The DC MD VA Live (X post ID: 1997516456788197761) shows multiple cruisers, flashing lights, and officers blocking access to the amphitheater lot. Additional reporting from Briefing Pool (X post ID: 1997529691603763519) captured crime-scene tape around a dark-colored vehicle with visible window damage.

Nearby roads reopened after 1 a.m., though detectives remained on scene into early Sunday morning.

Investigators Now Examining Possible Double Suicide

While MPD has officially classified the case as a “double fatal shooting,” multiple on-scene sources—including reporting from Briefing Pool and other independent journalists present at the perimeter—tell MDBayNews that investigators are evaluating whether the wounds were self-inflicted or inflicted between the two individuals inside the vehicle.

Several early indicators are driving that assessment:

  • No lookout, suspect description, or evidence of flight was issued.
  • No signs of forced entry or external struggle were observed, according to sources familiar with the initial forensic review.
  • The vehicle was found in a locked or secured condition, suggesting no third-party access.
  • The victims’ positions inside the vehicle reportedly match patterns consistent with self-inflicted gunshot wounds, though this remains unconfirmed.

An MPD spokesperson reached late Sunday did not comment on the suicide hypothesis but reaffirmed that the Homicide Branch is actively investigating, adding that “more information will be released when appropriate.”

Full confirmation will depend on ballistics, trajectory analysis, gunshot residue tests, and toxicology results—none of which have been finalized.

Because suicide is being examined, MDBayNews is withholding descriptive specifics about positioning, firearm details, or method beyond what police and on-scene public reporting have already disclosed.

Timeline of Events (Dec. 6–7)

10:30 p.m. — Residents report hearing gunfire; MPD dispatches units to 4800 Colorado Ave NW.
10:45–11:00 p.m. — Officers arrive; two adults found deceased inside a vehicle.
11:30 p.m.–12:30 a.m. — MPD Homicide Branch processes the scene; U.S. Park Police assist with parkland jurisdiction.
1:00 a.m. — Perimeter begins to lift; nearby roads reopened.
After 4:00 a.m. — MPD posts public safety alert on X, assuring residents of no continuing danger.

MDBayNews has reviewed public safety feeds and confirms no additional incidents were recorded in Rock Creek Park that evening.

Community Reaction and Park Context

The amphitheater area, closed to events since a 2017 structural substage failure, is currently undergoing partial rehabilitation. The National Park Service (NPS) and the Carter Barron Alliance have raised more than $2 million toward a $5 million renovation goal, with a tentative target of reopening in 2026.

Locals responding on X expressed shock that such a quiet, dormant venue was connected to a late-night fatal incident. One user posted, “I walk my dog past Carter Barron all the time—never imagined anything like this happening there.” Another noted the area’s limited lighting and deep tree cover, saying it “feels isolated after dark.”

Park safety data shows that Rock Creek Park receives over 1.7 million visits annually, but violent crime within park boundaries is statistically rare, according to NPS incident summaries.

Broader Public-Safety Trends

If the incident remains classified as a homicide, it would add to MPD’s 2025 tally of fatal shootings in Northwest D.C., though the department has not yet indicated whether it will update classification pending the suicide review.

D.C. has seen several cases in recent years where initial shooting reports were later reclassified as suicides—including a 2023 incident in Anacostia, where trajectory evidence led investigators to rule out third-party involvement after an extensive search for suspects.

Officials emphasize that Saturday’s event appears isolated, with no indication of broader criminal activity.

What Happens Next

MPD is expected to release a formal press statement once family notifications are complete and preliminary ballistic analysis is returned. The department encourages anyone with information to contact the tip line at (202) 727-9099 or text 50411.

Given the possibility of suicide, MDBayNews will continue to report with care, withholding unnecessary graphic detail and updating readers once MPD issues a definitive classification.

For now, detectives remain cautious: this case may still “shift direction depending on final forensic findings,” according to one official familiar with the process.
