Myrick Blasts Moore’s Redistricting Push as “Existential Threat to Democracy”

Lanham, MD — Republican gubernatorial candidate John Myrick is sounding the alarm over Governor Wes Moore’s proposal to form a mid-cycle redistricting commission, calling it “a true existential threat to democracy” and accusing the state’s Democratic supermajority of using gerrymandering to erase Republican voices from Maryland’s political map.

In a statement released Wednesday, Myrick pointed out that although roughly one-third of Maryland voters are registered Republicans, only one of the state’s eight congressional districts—the Eastern Shore’s 1st District—leans GOP.

“For decades, Maryland’s Democrat supermajority has worked to gerrymander our Congressional districts in order to eliminate any Republican representation,” Myrick said. “Disenfranchising our Maryland voters cannot be tolerated.”

Myrick, a former Marine and small-business advocate, emphasized that he opposes gerrymandering “regardless of which party attempts it.” He argued that Moore’s focus on how other states like Texas and North Carolina draw their maps is a political distraction from Maryland’s own lack of fair representation.

He also backed Senate President Bill Ferguson’s hesitation to take up mid-cycle redistricting, noting that Ferguson’s caution suggests the courts could intervene if Moore proceeds. “That shows a keen understanding of the situation — an understanding that the current Governor clearly lacks,” Myrick said.

The Moore administration announced last week that it intends to convene a redistricting panel in early 2026 to “modernize and realign” Maryland’s congressional boundaries. Critics see it as a maneuver to shore up Democratic control ahead of the 2026 elections, while supporters argue it’s needed to ensure compliance with federal standards after population shifts and court rulings in other states.

Myrick ended his statement with a call to action: “Marylanders deserve to be fairly represented. Maryland deserves better.”

MDBayNews Analysis: When ‘Fair Maps’ Mean Never Losing Power

With President Trump back in office and national politics shifting rightward, Maryland remains an island of deep-blue resistance — one where Democrats have long relied on gerrymandering to protect their hold on power. Governor Wes Moore’s mid-cycle “fair maps” commission looks less like reform and more like a last-ditch attempt to cement one-party rule before the political winds turn.

John Myrick’s warning strikes at the heart of Maryland’s political imbalance: Republicans make up nearly one-third of the electorate yet hold only one of eight congressional seats. The math alone tells the story. For years, Democrats have perfected a system that ensures “competitive” elections in name only, with district lines looping across counties to dilute conservative votes.

Under Trump’s second term, federal attention on election integrity and equal representation has intensified — making Moore’s timing suspect. Any mid-cycle map could draw immediate scrutiny from the courts or even federal oversight, especially if it appears designed to silence a major voting bloc.

Democrats spent years condemning redistricting efforts in states like Florida and Texas. Now, in Maryland, they defend the same practice when it benefits them. The difference is that in Trump’s America, voters are far more aware — and far less willing to accept the claim that “fairness” means permanent Democratic control.

For conservatives, Myrick’s challenge may mark the beginning of a broader reckoning: either Maryland restores competitive representation, or it risks becoming a symbol of the very disenfranchisement it claims to oppose.
