On September 11, 2025—a day etched into American memory as one of tragedy and unity—Howard County Council Chair Liz Walsh chose to amplify something else entirely: a grotesque comparison between Israel and Nazi Germany. Instead of remembrance for the nearly 3,000 Americans killed in the terrorist attacks of 2001, Walsh reposted propaganda comparing Jews under Nazi occupation to Palestinians today.
It was more than tone-deaf. It was a deliberate slap in the face to Americans grieving on the most solemn day of the year, and just one day after the political assassination of Charlie Kirk.
Walsh’s Flag Stunt
Days later, on September 13th, Walsh raised the flag at the Howard County government complex back to full staff in “civil disobedience” against a presidential order honoring Charlie Kirk, a man murdered in cold blood.
President Donald Trump had ordered the tribute in the wake of Kirk’s murder, calling him “a great man and a great fighter.” Millions of Americans, regardless of whether they agreed with Kirk politically, saw the gesture as a symbol of respect to his grieving family and acknowledgment of the horrific reality that political violence has entered American life once again.
Kirk wasn’t just a conservative firebrand; he was someone who gave countless young Americans the courage to stand up for themselves, debate respectfully, and fight for the values this country was built on. He debated across campuses and—contrary to the left’s caricature—listened to those who disagreed, even showing compassion when debates got heated.
But Walsh? Instead of respecting mourning families or simply staying silent, she used her elected position to desecrate a national symbol. She claimed she did it to “honor those Kirk denigrated.” In reality, she dishonored her constituents who expect dignity, not theatrics, from their leaders. She then had to boast about it in the Baltimore Banner in a letter published on September 26th.
Snippets, Smears, and Glorification of Violence
What makes Walsh’s behavior even uglier is the way she, like so many on the left, cherry-picks Charlie Kirk’s words to paint him as a villain who deserved no sympathy.
In her public statements and letter to The Baltimore Banner, she rattled off a list of “offensive” Kirk quotes—stripped of context, reduced to soundbites, and weaponized to smear a man who could no longer defend himself. By doing so, she didn’t just dishonor Kirk—she effectively glorified his murder.
Because if Kirk was supposedly nothing but a racist, sexist, anti-democratic figure, then why mourn him? Why honor him? That’s the chilling logic behind Walsh’s grandstanding. It’s the same playbook the left has used time and again: take a snippet, strip away the context, and use it to justify the ugliest behavior imaginable.
Anyone who actually watched Charlie Kirk in action knows better. On campuses across America, he debated students of all backgrounds and political persuasions. He listened, he engaged, and he even showed compassion when conversations turned personal. His message wasn’t hate—it was conviction. He believed in the Constitution, in the strength of the family, and in the value of America’s founding principles.
But Walsh doesn’t want voters to see that side. Instead, she reduces him to caricature—because only then can she excuse her own disrespect and moral preening.
Selective “Values”
Walsh argues that honors should “reflect our values.” But here’s the truth: she doesn’t mean our values—she means hers. And certainly not the values of the many Howard County residents who respected Charlie Kirk, even if they disagreed with him. And certainly not the values of a country that is supposed to mourn political violence, no matter who the victim is.
Conservatives have lowered flags, attended vigils, and shown respect when Democratic leaders have been assassinated or tragically killed. That’s called putting humanity above partisanship. The left, however, led by people like Liz Walsh, cannot bring themselves to do the same.
To Walsh, some lives are worth honoring and others are not. Some assassinations demand solemnity, others are just excuses for political point-scoring. It’s selective compassion at its worst—hypocrisy dressed up as principle.
Her values are selective and self-serving. She preaches “peace and justice for all” but promotes antisemitic tropes on 9/11. She claims to condemn violence, but glorifies the murder of Kirk by rejecting his memorial. It’s the double standard we’ve come to expect from Democrats—compassion only for those who parrot their ideology.
A Record of Radicalism
Walsh has been busy auditioning for higher office, running for Howard County Executive in 2026. But voters should take note: this isn’t about “green space” or “schools.” This is about an activist with a law degree who will use public office to wage personal ideological battles. She already proved it by reposting Nazi rhetoric on the anniversary of 9/11, amplifying propaganda comparing Israel to Nazi Germany. She proved it again on 9/13: instead of honoring a murdered political figure—even one she opposed—she staged a flag stunt to spit on his memory.
Her actions tell voters what her priorities really are: scoring points on social media, embracing radical causes, and fueling division. And if she’s willing to politicize death, mourning, and remembrance, what won’t she politicize?
The Bottom Line
Howard County—and Maryland—deserve better than Liz Walsh. At a time when Americans need unity, she offers only bitterness. At a time when leaders should heal, she inflames. She dishonored 9/11. She dishonored Charlie Kirk’s grieving family. She dishonored the American flag. And she did all of it proudly, under the guise of “values” that amount to nothing more than partisan spite.
Maryland deserves leaders who can put politics aside in moments of tragedy. Howard County deserves better than an activist who exploits mourning to glorify violence against her political enemies.
When voters head to the polls in 2026, they should remember: Liz Walsh isn’t a public servant. She’s a partisan activist hiding behind the trappings of office who would rather mock than mourn, divide than unite, and smear than serve.
Howard County—and America—deserve better.
