Opinion | Maryland Deserves Better Than One-Party Rule: It’s Time to Drain the Annapolis Swamp

An illustrated cartoon of a man driving a red car labeled 'MARYLAND' towards the edge of a cliff, with an expression of concern. The speech bubble above him reads 'WES MOORE'.

There’s a growing sentiment among everyday Marylanders — not activists, not bureaucrats, but the people who work, raise families, and pay taxes — that something is very, very wrong in Annapolis. That gut instinct is right. The ruling Democrats in Maryland have long stopped listening to the people. Instead, they’ve become infatuated with ideology, detached from reality, and hell-bent on dragging this state down a path that leads to higher taxes, crumbling trust, and economic disaster.

Let’s talk about the Kirwan Commission, their so-called “Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.” A fancy name for a $30+ billion dollar spending spree with little accountability and vague promises of education reform. While families begged for more parental input, practical curriculum, and financial transparency, the Democrats forced this education slush fund through anyway. Why? Because power — not results — is the real goal.

Everyone saw the price tag. Everyone voiced concerns. And Annapolis Democrats did it anyway.

Then came Tax Hell July — the month when Democrats decided the people hadn’t been squeezed hard enough. Dozens of new and increased taxes, fees, and tolls were rolled out like a summer fireworks show: flashy, expensive, and dangerous. The state took more from its citizens just as inflation and cost of living have already reached breaking points. Did the people ask for this? No. Did Democrats care? Not in the slightest.

And while Marylanders struggle to afford groceries, housing, and energy, what’s the progressive darling wing of the Democratic Party doing? Praising a fringe New York mayoral candidate who literally wants the government to take over grocery stores. Yes, you read that right. State-run supermarkets. It’s not satire — it’s socialism knocking on our door. And Democrats in Maryland are opening it wide.

This is the direction the state is headed under one-party Democrat control — praising radicals, punishing taxpayers, and pushing dangerous policy experiments that sound like they were drafted by college freshmen high off a Che Guevara documentary.

It gets worse. In Annapolis, illegal immigrants are prioritized over actual citizens. The left is more interested in sanctuary politics than protecting law-abiding Marylanders. They promise “free” benefits — paid for by you — to people who haven’t contributed a dime into the system. And if you dare raise a concern, you’re smeared as cruel, heartless, or worse.

Let’s be clear: Wes Moore and his Democratic allies are not leading Maryland forward — they’re driving it off a cliff. They want to grow government, not opportunity. They want control, not freedom. They want dependence, not personal responsibility.

This isn’t a party serving the people. It’s a political machine protecting itself — a swamp that needs draining.

Maryland deserves a government that values hard work, parental rights, fiscal sanity, and public safety. We need leaders who listen, not lecture. Who serve the people, not their party. Who believe in lifting everyone up — not dragging the whole state down under bloated bureaucracy and failed ideology.

Enough is enough.

The time has come to fight back at the ballot box and send a clear message: We don’t want New York-style socialism. We don’t want endless taxes. And we sure don’t want Annapolis Democrats deciding what’s best for our kids, our wallets, or our lives.

It’s time to take back Maryland — and rebuild it with common sense, courage, and freedom.
