Baltimore, MD – A Maryland man known only as “Duke Fresh,” who rose through the ranks of organized crime, human trafficking, and the local PTA, was honored Thursday night at a gala hosted by The Institute for Progressive Empathy™ as the 2025 “Man of the Year.”
Duke, whose rap sheet is longer than the MARC Train schedule, has previously served time for racketeering, goat theft, and something referred to in court documents only as “emotional tax evasion.” But despite—or perhaps because of—his criminal past, he has become a darling of left-wing elites.
“We love a redemption arc,” said institute founder Wren Moonbeam-Goldstein, sipping ethically sourced absinthe through a compostable straw. “Yes, he trafficked endangered turtles and possibly humans, but he also supports wind energy. That’s real courage.”
A Maryland Man for All Seasons
Duke, who once led a violent gang called The Tax Refund Reapers, now operates a nonprofit called “Chains for Change,” which provides job training for other formerly incarcerated racketeers in the art of vegan candle-making and political consulting.
Local officials can’t get enough of him.
“Sure, he was caught smuggling experimental frogs across state lines,” said Montgomery County Councilmember Breyden Latté-Bailey (they/them), “but he also composts. He’s basically a green Che Guevara.”

Maryland Man Launches Senate Bid, Endorsed by Every University Professor on Earth
This week, Duke announced his 2026 Senate campaign under the slogan: “Legalize Everything, Except Mean Tweets.” His platform includes decriminalizing unicycles on highways, granting tax credits for interpretive dance therapy, and ensuring every child has access to free gender-neutral alpacas.
Within 72 hours, he received endorsements from AOC, six NPR interns, and a recently reactivated MySpace page for Rage Against the Machine.
“He’s the future,” said former professor of Advanced Feelings, Dr. Juniper-Snow. “If you don’t support him, you’re basically voting for climate fascism.”
Inspiring the Youth
At a recent high school appearance (booked by accident when he was mistaken for a jazz fusion DJ), Duke told students:
“Never let a RICO charge hold you back. Unless it’s federal. Then flee to Delaware.”
The auditorium erupted in applause. Duke then signed copies of his new memoir “From Felon to Fellow: My Journey Through Systemic Karma.”
Critics Silenced
Not everyone is thrilled.
“He used to run illegal casinos inside abandoned Chick-fil-As,” said one anonymous parent. “But now he teaches sociology at my kid’s charter school. The kids call him ‘Sensei of Resistance.’ What happened to background checks?”
The parent was immediately doxxed by a local Tumblr group and forced to attend a reeducation workshop titled “Empathy Is Mandatory.”
Next Up for Maryland Man: Netflix Deal, Climate Czarship
Rumors swirl that Duke Fresh has inked a Netflix deal for a 12-part docudrama directed by Taika Waititi and funded by the Federal Department of Vibes. He’s also reportedly being considered for Maryland’s new position of State Climate Czar, which includes a parking spot, a ceremonial shovel, and unrestricted access to Gwynns Falls.
Asked whether he regrets anything, Duke simply shrugged:
“I did what I had to do. The trafficking, the bribes, the crypto pyramid scheme—but I composted every plastic wrapper I ever used. And at the end of the day, isn’t that what matters?”
