Just when we need more creativity, more connection, and more community—government overreach strikes again.
The Garage, a DIY music venue located on a 77-acre horse farm in Boyds, Maryland, has gone silent. The grassroots performance space, co-founded in 2023 by Grace Cotting and Levi Hebeisen, was more than just a venue. It was a labor of love, a hub for emerging artists, and a rare example of the American spirit thriving in its purest form: free, unpolished, and unapologetically independent.
But not independent enough for Montgomery County.
After hosting over 200 shows and drawing musicians from across 20 states and seven countries, The Garage was forced to cease live music operations due to county zoning and permitting issues. The Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services determined that the venue didn’t meet the narrow definition of “agritourism,” and revoked the permissions that allowed it to operate.
No violence. No drugs. No complaints. Just music—and a local government that couldn’t stand to see something beautiful flourish without their stamp of control.
To their credit, Cotting and Hebeisen are complying with the county’s demands. They’ve suspended any activity that could be deemed “illegal” and are working with other venues to relocate upcoming shows. But the question remains: Why is our government so quick to crush creativity under the weight of red tape?
At a time when our country is starving for unity, art, and expression, places like The Garage are essential. Yet this is exactly what happens when bureaucrats—many of whom wouldn’t know punk from polka—decide what’s allowed on private land in the name of “regulation.”
Supporters argue, and rightly so, that The Garage embodies the spirit of rural revitalization and cultural entrepreneurship. Isn’t that what “agritourism” should be? A way for farms and rural spaces to invite the community in, share a bit of soul, and maybe even survive financially?
Instead, the same county that claims to value diversity and inclusion has shut down one of the most authentic, all-ages, community-focused music spaces in the region.
This is what happens when regulation outweighs reason. When compliance is prioritized over contribution. When fear of innovation trumps freedom of expression.
The fight isn’t over. The community isn’t going anywhere. And neither is the music—it’s just finding another barn, another basement, another backyard.
But it shouldn’t have to.
