John Myrick never planned to run for governor.
“If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be doing this, I would’ve sent you for a drug test,” he joked during our recent interview. But after watching what he calls “reckless mismanagement” in Annapolis—turning a $5.5 billion surplus into a $3.5 billion deficit—Myrick decided he couldn’t stay on the sidelines.
Now, the longtime public servant, combat veteran, and proud product of Maryland’s working-class roots is stepping forward with a mission: restore fiscal responsibility, reform broken systems, and return common sense to government.
A Life of Service, Not Politics
Myrick’s life has been defined by service. Raised in Harford County, with deep family ties dating back to 1640 in Maryland, his father was a Marine and State Trooper. Myrick himself served as a sheriff’s deputy before a long career in federal intelligence and military service, including 23 years in the Air Force Reserve.
He’s quick to note that he didn’t grow up with privilege. “We had to budget carefully. Sometimes the money didn’t stretch. I know what it means to struggle, to work hard, and to build a life from the ground up.”
That humility is paired with sharp frustration at what he sees as government excess: “If someone could show me where all this new spending has improved our lives, I wouldn’t be running.”

Fixing Maryland’s Fiscal Mess
Myrick pledges to bring accountability to Annapolis, starting with a line-by-line audit of every agency. “It’s your money and my money—not the state’s. Marylanders deserve to know where every cent is going,” he said.
He blames the Moore administration for implementing over 300 new taxes and fees, including tire, mattress, and tech taxes, which he calls “a slap in the face” to working families. “Maryland’s hemorrhaging jobs while our neighbors are thriving.”
Education Rooted in Results, Not Rhetoric
Myrick’s platform also focuses on education—and it’s personal. He’s the product of Maryland’s public schools, and his running mate, Dr. Brenda J. Cham, is a longtime special education teacher from Washington County.
“Only 25% of education dollars reach the classroom. That’s outrageous,” he said. He advocates for school choice, increased parental rights, and cutting administrative bloat. “If kids can’t read their diplomas, we’ve failed them.”
A Governor for All of Maryland
Myrick emphasizes unity and inclusiveness—despite his Republican affiliation, he says he’s not running to represent just one party.
“I’m not a Republican governor—I’ll be Maryland’s governor,” he said. “Whether you’re from Baltimore, the Eastern Shore, or Western Maryland, your voice matters.”
He’s also pledged to investigate corruption across state systems—including family court abuses and juvenile justice failures—and says no one in government is above accountability.
Looking Ahead
Myrick isn’t interested in using the governor’s mansion as a stepping stone. “This isn’t about ego or ambition. I’ve had a successful career. I’m doing this because I believe Maryland is worth fighting for.”
With a direct message, a relatable story, and a bold reform agenda, John Myrick is hoping to offer Maryland voters something they haven’t seen in a long time: a governor who keeps his word.

Thanks for stepping up to the plate to handle the garbage that has been shoved down the throats of the Maryland citizens for far too long, we need accountability and better more rational education system and not that democrat slush fund they call the Kirwin project , everyone was against it and they passed it anyway just like they did with all of the over priced taxes they stuck the citizens with in July, and then I read in the Baltimore Sun interview the Annapolis Democrats are praising the communist Jihadist running for mayor in New York who wants the state to take over the grocery stores, and wants to give free things too the people who do not want to work and make the tax payers pay for it, thats where the democrats politicians in Maryland are taking us , they need to be stopped before they completely destroy Maryland! Thanks John Myriyk for stepping up to help out the citizens of Maryland!
